A review of Wyke Lion by Anonymous written on Monday 28th of February 2011
I went to the Wyke Lion to celebrate my birthday with 7 family members. We had booked in advance for a 5pm table on a Sunday. On arrival we were told that there were no roast dinners left and only two of the main course options left on the "2 courses for £9.98" menu. Sunday being one of the busiest days I found this very poor. Orders were eventually taken - everyone opting for the steak and ale pie - only for the waiter to return 10 mins later to say they only had 2 pies left so 6 of us had to have the fish and chips, the only remaining option. The starters were served and plates cleared. We then waited an hour for mains, querying the time it was taking with the owner, who was rude and obnoxious and couldn't have cared less.
The mains eventually arrived for 7 of us and the remaining person's meal was served 10 mins after the rest of us had been served. The steak and ale pie was lukewarm, tasteless and unseasoned and we had to ask for gravy as none was served. The fish and chips again were lukewarm, the fish inedible as it was riddled with bones, the mushy peas were lacking peas and were mainly water and there was only a table spoon of them on each plate so we had to ask for more and the chips were soggy.
We managed to get the £75 bill reduced to £50 but will not be giving them further custom. Pity really as the actually pub itself is lovely inside and a nice plan to have a drink but the food and service is dire..
