A review of St Mary's R C Church by Edmund Burke written on Wednesday 15th of July 2009
I have mixed memories of St Mary's. I was baptised there and attended St Mary's Boys' School for a while, before my family moved house to Baildon. But life for me as a schoolchild was not simple. Since my mother had a job, to help keep the family going, it was my task, at age 7, to take my younger sister to St Mary's Infants' School, which was near the Anglican Cathedral, on my way to St Mary's Boys' School, which was next to St Mary's Church. Consequently I arrived late several times, and as a punishment was caned twice, in front of the whole school, by the headmaster. To avoid a repetition of this, I took risks, and sometimes ran over the road, at the crossroads, when the lights were green, to make sure I arrived on time. One morning, as I was doing this, I was knocked down by a tram. I still remember being pushed up the road by the board behind my feet, with my knees grating over the cobble stones. But fortunately I screamed loud enough for the tram to stop. Memories? Yes. Fond memories? You've got to be joking!.
