A review of St Mary's R C Church by MGT written on Wednesday 24th of March 2010
It was inevitable that St Mary's would close. All the close community housing the convents just disappeared with the changing times. It was a great parish with a great church at the heart of it. But that no longer exists. I remeber Father Flynn the parish Priest he always recognised me when I went to confession. I really did not like to go into those small dark boxes. All so quiet and then he would just quickly slide the partition, and as soon as I started talking he would say my name...I was so scared..I forgot my sins and made some up just to get out quickly....
Then there was a Monsignour Ronchetti. I remeber him coming down to the St Mary's Girls School. We were all in the hall and Sister Sebastian was the Headmistress then. She told us that when he was seated in the hall we would all have to file by and kiss his ring. I used to be in the Scala Panto's loved them. I was also lucky enough to be chosen as a May aqueen for the parish, I really loved that, and during my time we went to St Aidans in Baildon and for the first time for the parish we won the May Queen cup. All those things are now gone as with the church. We can only keep the happy memories, and due to many circumstances the church is lost to us but never forgotten..
